I've just read that centrelink will have to refund over $700m to welfare recipients due to the robodebt scheme. Did anyone actually get a call saying they owed money?

I received a call in March 2018 about ‘our debt’. It totaled almost 7k, and we’ve paid the whole lot. Hopefully we get ours back.

When we got the debt I had just had our second child, my partner was only earning 57k. He was also made redundant in October 2018 and we still had to pay back almost $100 a week to this debt. We missed out on so much stuff because of it so I’m really hoping we get it all back.

You don’t get a call, you get a letter. If you have paid the debt back, you would have received a letter in the past 2 weeks advising that you are part of a class action. Those that chose to opt out will not get their money back. Those that stayed in the class action will receive a refund.

OP here. Sorry I meant the actual robodebt phone call but hey it's great that people are getting something back from this huge blunder.

This is incorrect, it has nothing to do with the class action as it has not gone to court yet. Everyone who had a robodebt raised is having it waived/refunded.

Awww bless your heart. It has everything to do with it. Do you think if there wasn't a class action they would have suddenly started giving people money saying opps we made a mistake, not a chance in hell. It's a preemptive action trying to put the fire out.

Fine, yes, but it's not the class action result that is making them pay back the money, as it hasn't gone to court yet. But the comment stating you only get your money back if you have stayed in the class action is completely false. That's more the point I was making.

^ Agreed. I think the whole robodebt system was deemed illegal. I could be wrong though :)

So if they pilfered money from your tax return saying you owed more money due to a miscalculation in fta you won't get anything back? My lucks not that good so I don't have high hopes.

During said phone call I don’t suppose you told them all your personal details and a possible bank account number to deposit money

My brother paid his debt, so I'm happy for him that he'll be getting his money back. We've been waiting for a review since April 2019.
