Have you lost income and are you worried about your rental situation?

Answered 4 years ago

I ask this as i havent heard much on this...but I thought it would be front and centre at this time and that concerns me,as tenants are usually very undersupported/ have the imbalance in rights.

Yes and you can't access the rental relief unless the landlord agrees to a rent reduction.. Which ours won't so we can't access any help

It’s a tricky situation with those in lots of debt with rentals that’s for sure...

They won't get their money, if they have no means to pay the debt then they won't. They'll just go bankrupt or catch the first plane out of here.

Yes! This is why I would rather have an empty rental at the moment.

If you afford that why not but this situation isn't going to be a quick fix, it's long term pain.

I will probably sell it.

I think most will realise they will have to pay when they have debt collectors at the door, not to mention never getting another rental again.

I used to date someone who being chased by debt collectors. They're pretty easy to avoid, they just harass you through the phone, send letters to your house threatening legal action. It never happened. He actually got out of paying because they breached the time frame they were allowed to chase him for - i can't remember how long it was but he came back at them through free legal advice and it all got wiped.

Im not too fussed if the rent doesn't get paid, that's what insurance is for. I wonder how the man you dated went long term, he will be unable to buy a house, rent a house, get a loan, a phone plan. All to get out of a few debts.

Sorry to let you know he does all of those things and is in the process of buying a house with new partner. We're still friends. The debt was wiped and no black left on his record. I guess he slipped through the system.

Seems like landlords trying to convince themselves renters who don't pay them will be financially scarred for life. Don't take their dreams away it's all they have left.

Do you not know how insurance works?

Im not too concerned, but anyone renting in the next few years should be, because the prices are going to go through the roof. You might laugh now at us not getting any money, but it will cost you down the track.

Tbe current situation leaves landlords at a loss. Centrelink funds should go to rent first. Common semse then bills. Then food. Alcohol, smokes and drugs are not essentials and shouldnt be allowed to be bought during an emergancy crisis anyway

I would say food first, with in reason, a payment towards bills then rent.

Put things in perspective if you are renting and lose your job and no savings it’s time to renegotiate your rental. You could look at capitalizing the debt until you get a new job.

Yes but the stats say landlords are not renegotiating and many are facing homeless as they can't afford the rate and don't have means to apply for a new one

REPLY

No because the banks don't renegotiate mortgage payments.

Some money? You literally are advocating for “nicely” stealing out of someone’s pocket because of your own poor financial situation? ???

Its worrying how many people will struggle being homeless after this. A lot of people will get into debt they can't pay, and will end up blacklist by property managers.

It’s mind blowing how entitled people feel to other people’s earnings.

No I am not a landlord.
But just with every single other goods and service that belong to someone else, I am required to pay to them to use it.
If I can’t pay, I can’t use it.
Centerlink has been very generous to make sure you can pay your rent. It’s not a landlords responsibility to look after your family.

And no, tenants do not have less rights than landlords.
You sounds like a union worker

Dont know what state you guys commenting live in, but in WA rentals are going crazy! I am a landlord, but have also worked in real estate (mainly property Management) for the past 20 years. There is a huge shortage of rentals here. We get 10+ groups to every viewing. One lady last week said she had applied for 17 properties! Ive never seen it like this before. Prices of vacant properties are going up and there will be rent increases for many tenants when renewing their leases (with the 6 month pause/restrictions on this being lifted). Being in Perth, most if our news + morning shows etc comes from Sydney. So much of what is being said or advice given is completely irrelevant or just plain wrong in relation to Perth. Just because it's a certain way in NSW doesn't mean it's like that everywhere in the country.

Ha ha ha i was waiting for hard done by landlord to pipe up. I agree with you but you won't anyone who cares around here they've all been drinking the same kool aid - housing prices only increase, the only way you can get ahead is by buying investment properties yarda yarda yarda. They'll get their's though ....tick tok tick tok.
