As a Christian do you care about the origins of Christmas and the fact it’s a pagan celebration?

Answered 4 years ago

I’m no Christian but I think it’s strange that some fundamentalist Christians actually celebrate pagan customs like Xmas and Easter especially since the god of the bible destroyed pagan tribes and said they were disgusting in his eyes.

Xmas is an ancient Germanic pagan celebration or ritual were the fir or pine tree originally was brought inside each year to keep the wood sprites warm,
Sweets were hung around the tree as offerings to them,
the bells were strung around the tree so they could jingle when an appreciative spirit was nearby.
The pentagram was the star of protection placed on the tip of the tree who’s 5 points represented the 4 main elements of the earth bound together by the 5th element (the creative god source or whatever you wish to call it)

Easter is also the celebration of the spring equinox & the pagan Germanic goddess ’Eostre’ it’s a time of sex and fertility which is why the bunny and eggs are used as the symbolism of Easter.

I wrote the post but I’m not a Christian, I have a degree in history and anthropology - these are just some of the questions that intrigue me....the fact that people claim a faith they don’t truly care about and know.
For me the truth means a lot which is why I left religion and follow no path, I am spiritual but non religious, just don’t understand those people following a path and not fully researching it 🤔

I don’t think studying those fields makes you an expert in this area. You might need to brush up on theology and psychology to get a complete picture.

Why psychology? It has nothing to do with history 🙄 my parents are also both teachers and my father taught history and literature in a German university, so yes I do know a lot about it - you don’t need to be an expert to know the origins of Christian celebrations, most people should know this as BASIC history 🙄😂

YOU think that is what constitutes Christmas. Christian’s believe it’s the birth of Christ and there is documentation to prove he existed. Muslims believe something different and Jews something different again. Just because you do not believe in it that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist or is wrong. I don’t celebrate Eid or Diwali in a religious way (I do join in with friends who celebrate) but I don’t argue the basis of the celebrations.

I don’t think anything I’m stating the FACTS of where the celebration originated from.
What you’ve changed it into now doesn’t change the fact it’s pagan in origin. As a history teacher I’ve done my research and studied into this in depth so I’m genuinely curious as to why this doesn’t bother fundamentalist Christians some it goes against bible teaching. No where in the bible does it mention Xmas or Easter. In fact the bible mentions that pagan celebrations are detestable to god. Just saying you can’t be a real Christian if you live with such contradictions.

There are a few Christian groups that don't celebrate christmas or easter because of the reasons you mentioned. E.g. Jehovah's Witnesses & Christadelphians. If this is something that matters to you, you could find out more about them.

ANSWER

It's actually not pagan. Christmas is celebrated 9 months after the annunciation with is on the 25th of March, that's when the immaculate conception of Jesus is celebrated in the Catholic church, and 9 months later (25th December) the birth of Jesus is celebrated. It might be coincidence that other pagan traditions and rituals are celebrated at that time also, but the date of Christmas has not come from them

Sounds like you’re assuming christians celebrate in the same secular way you do. For Christian’s these holidays are significant celebrations and hold a much deeper meaning than trees and eggs. For christians Christmas is not about the tree and Easter is not about bunnies and eggs. A star and a baby in a manger and an empty cross and an empty tomb are the true symbols of Christmas and Easter.

They are not because it’s not the origins of the ritual of Easter and Christmas. Do you know why Constantine merged these pagan rituals into the church? Do some research and find out. I’m not a Christian by the way.

seriously could you be any more self rightous and condescending. Pagan is NOT secular, thats why the Christians took it over. How dare you dismiss peoples religious beliefs by calling it 'just trees and eggs'. Pagans belief in their god is in every way as sacred to them as yours is to you. Just because you cant see outside your tiny mind doesnt invalidate others beliefs.
