What is it in particular that you are struggling with? I’m not being a smart arse, just could give a more specific answer if there was a certain issue. Saving money, allocating money, paying bills? I personally didn’t like barefoot investor.

I am struggling on knowing how much I should budget for birthdays, how much to budget for holidays, how often to eat out as a family

You made a decision on how much you feel is reasonable. For my kids birthday parties I spend $250 because we go to an activity and $100 for present. Eat out once a month $100, anything left can go on a coffee date. I add up all my bills for the year, divide by 26 and put that money in my bills account so it’s sitting there when I need to pay rego , insurances, school fees, phone, electricity etc. look at your last 2-3 bills to figure out how much it’s likely to be for one year. Good luck.

If you’re really struggling then I would start by not eating out and not having a holiday just to get some savings up. Even if it’s just for a year. They are not necessities. My kids get $100 for birthday and only have a party every second year. My son has never had one because he’s never wanted one. Make sure you pay all your bills, that is the most important thing. Don’t get a credit card. My number one rule is if I can’t afford to pay for it outright, I don’t get it. ( bedsides my mortgage and car ). Use a budget planner. There are plenty for free online.

Step one, pay all your bills each fortnight including rent/mortgage. Then out $100 in an emergency account for emergencies. Then buy food and petrol. Then whatever is left goes in your wallet in cash. That’s what you can spend. Put it in a debit card if you like, but get rid of all credit cards.

oky I budget 1k for Christmas. 1k is roughly $20 a week. So I have to "hide" the money on a Velocity Prepaid debit card (free). I have it set up so my bank account automattically sends $20 a week to that velocity account and i hide the card in a folder with the passports, birth certificates etc so a hassle and in December, or November, I can buy the pressies and our contribution to CHristmas lunch - food, booze etc. We have another prepaid debit card that has my husbands phone come off it and also our holiday account - so that one is $50 a fortnight, not much I know but so we can hav ea couple of nights here and there without freaking out about money. That card is hidden too. I also have "sub accounts" on my ING - one for car - I have a 20 year old car and budget 1k for rego and insurance and 1k repairs each year which is $40 a week transferred to the "car" account so when we put it in for a service, like new tyres - it was more than we had in the account - $550, but we had $400 in it so it wasn't a total hit like before we had allocated the money.

We previously used the prepaid debit cards for coffee ... But decided to quit eating out this year bar special occasions. I was thinking of keeping cash for that in an envelope. Like stash $10 a week somewhere. We spend a few hundred on our kids birthday as we invite whole family, on purpose as only time to do it.. I do have a talk to the hubby a few weeksbefore and decide or roughtly talk of what we have on that month and juggle the money.
