We drive up in the jan holidays cos hubby comes too for a week or two and need more stuff he drives back and I stay with the kids till just before they have to go school. He takes back almost everything and I’m left with one suitcase plus the kids all have a backpack to carry some stuff. If I go during the year I’ll fly with the kids as it’s usually only a week. I’m not set with my dates so I’m always on the lookout for sales with tiger. Usually for the 4 of us I’ve never had to pay more than $600 return at most. The one way trip coming home in jan is always cheap too, keep an eye out for sales. One year they had $40 one way tickets. It cost me $200 with luggage to come back. I don’t mind the drive from syd to melb as we leave early about 3-4am so the kids sleep the first few hours and with flying it’s almost the same factoring in travel time to and from the airport but the last few yrs the drive has become a bit harder for me mentally so I’m always on the lookout for cheap flights to fly instead

I’m in Brisbane and have family in melb and Perth. We Travel to melb on average twice a year. Perth once a year because it’s so expensive, but we stay longer. Family come to us a couple of times a year too.

When I first moved I came back a few times a year. But the visits got too much, it was too hard to go and catch up with everyone.

From ACT to Vic, we aim to go max 2 times a year, usually July and Christmas. July is only a maybe though. Hubby's parents aim to visit once a year. My parents aren't so far away in NSW so we visit each other maybe monthly.

We try to visit every 6 months. Covid has delayed us though and it's been 8 months since we last saw our family and friends.

Can I ask do you find it is better to drive or fly taking everything into consideration

We drive. It's not a bad drive really. From the ACT to the QLD/NSW border. We spread it out over 3 days so we can cruise a bit. Plus, flights are too expensive. We have 4 kids and flights out of Canberra are pricey. Then adding in hire car and driving costs from Brisbane, it's just not worth it.

Once a year at least but if I can go twice I will. Money is the issue but my family moved closer to the qld boarder I’m in Nsw so it’s only a 12 hour drive rather than 24hr

Before kids every 6-8 weeks for the weekend. This was back in the day when tiger cane out and could flying return for 100-150. With one kid every 3–4 months. Now with 3 kids we go up for the entire jan holidays and maybe once more during the year. Parents come down 1 or 2 a year
