Am I an Aunty?

My husband and I have been married for over 10 years and his niece and nephew call me by my first name. Hubby is referred to as uncle. Is it just me or is it strange that I’m not “Aunty” to his niece and nephew? They are early teens (so born before I joined the family) but so were my nieces and nephews and they call my husband uncle. I don’t blame the niece and nephew as they would take their cue from the adults of the family and if they are not referring to me as “Aunty” (assuming this is how it has happened) then they would not call me Aunty. I thought I had a decent relationship with hubby’s family but currently feel as though I am not accepted as a member of the family. Am I over thinking it? Do your children call people who have married into the family as Aunt/Uncle?

My nieces and nephews aged 19-25 don't call my husband Uncle and we have been together 19 years, the reason is because when they were small our relationship was only new and it would have been strange to call him Uncle, then when they were older it was just odd to change it and too late. They often all talk about how it's too weird to say Uncle Sam now instead of just Sammy as they've known him as that all their lives. Your situation sounds similar and you might be reading too much in to it.

I don’t consider my husband’s nieces and nephews as my nieces and nephews. They do not need to call me Aunty. Also, my nieces and nephews don’t call me Aunty. First names only.

In my family none of us are called aunty or uncle, we all just go by first names. We only use Mum, Dad, Grandma, Grandad and Poppy, one of the Grandma’s goes by her first name too. Works for us.

My husband’s nieces and nephews have never called him uncle, let alone me Aunty. They just call us by our first names. I find it weird but it’s just what they do in that family.

No I don’t think it’s weird. My niece was about 10 when I met my husband and she has never called him uncle.

I and my kids use aunty and uncle always. One set of my nieces from one family don’t call us aunty or uncle but my sisters kids do use aunty uncle. I like being called aunty, I think it’s respectful.

Oh, so sorry, I didn’t answer your question! Yes you’re an aunty but some kids just don’t use it. A bit rude they call your husband uncle and not you aunty tho.
