This happened in our funeral home in nz a couple of times. We didn't agree with it but isn't our choice. People try to justify it but you can't really

None of the reports say how old that dog was, if it was an older dog it would have spent it's final years stressing out and unhappy. Younger dog would have adjusted fine. I don't get why this has made international news though, how many deceased people's pets end up getting put down because nobody can take them? Not really all that different.

It is different because they never gave this dog a chance at being rehomed. Just killed it. Perfectly healthy dog and the selfish owner made sure it was killed just because he didn’t want to be alone in his casket. Arsehole. Also, I’ve had family members adopt dogs who were in their later years. They adjusted fine. As long as they get treated lovingly they’ll be fine. They’ll miss their owners sure, but they’ll be just fine.

My uncle died very suddenly earlier this year. He had an old dog who had just before his death been through a lot.... cancer, toe amputation and a few days before my uncle died she was in a dog fight and needed 30 odd stitches in her belly. She almost died after that. So when my uncle did not return, it did seem almost certain this poor dog would die. Of a broken heart. I’ve never seen such a sad soul. But, my wonderful sister adopted her and she did get over her grief and is living what ever time she has left comfortably with my sister, whom she adores. Adopt an old, grieving dog and give it love and care, and they can have a good life still.
