Learning another language

Answered 4 years ago

I'd really love to learn German. If you've learnt another language how did you go about it? I've been using duo lingo but wanting to try and learn a bit quicker. I have alot of family in Germany and would love to visit and of course speak the language. Any help would be great :)

I learned French for a while with Babel, just for fun, and it was quite good. You have to pay but it's a pretty good deal AS LONG AS you've got the discipline to keep up with it! I got slack after a while so I cancelled it, but you can rejoin anytime. Most things are explained fairly well but in a few spots I wished I had a teacher or native speaker to clear things up.

I found I got really good at reading and writing it but not so good at understanding it when spoken. They occasionally played clips of conversation and they'd talk SO FAST that I couldn't pick out individual words! But a big block of text, no worries.

Duolingo is good for vocab - I think the key is do it often even for short lengths of time. I did some short courses at the wea and tafe. Do you know any native speakers you can chat to once you get the basics? Speaking and listening practice is really important if you’re keen on speaking to rels.

Alhought my mum was born in Austria she came over as a child so she's forgotten the language. My nan can speak fluently but unfortunately she's quite old and not doing so well.

Goethe institute. There are a lot of YouTube videos you can search for. When learning French I used to watch a little French series all the time and it really helped, just something I found interesting. I feel like it is really about watching and listening a lot. Then the rest comes from there even if you have subtitles. It is definitely doable , go for it!
