Are we creating a class system in Australia?

Answered 4 years ago

Jobkeeper and Jobseeker are both basically unemployment benefits, but somewhere along the line we have all accepted that it is ok to pay different rates to different groups, how has this not been noticed? Why is one group of unemployed worth more then another group?

First of all there will always be class systems.
Second of all, the payments are currently temporary measures.
If it goes on long term then it would be time to start arguing the point.
It’s ok to pay different rates because the governments choices have meant the avaibility if jobs doesnt not meet the job seekers.
Unpopular opinion, if you are receiving the unemployment payment long term that’s 100% your fault. There is always jobs.
That being said a class system comes into play. Because a lot of people don’t like people with poor hygiene, poor language or a poor attitude. All of which are common (not all just COMMON) in lo were so up economic places.
There comes a point where you are responsible for yourself and you upbringing no longer can be the excuse.
If you are a long term unemployed its on you. I know people who got jobs without speaking more than 200 words of English.
Furthermore the things the government have put into place is took stop us going into a depression.

The reason different rates are given to different groups is because it’s different circumstances

Re- unpopular opinion: Hm.. I get what you are saying but I disagree. The class system here absolutely sucks and is very out of control. I look at the richer classes here and I shake my head repeatively at how much ‘support,’ And benefits they get, how much they are biased toward themselves, support themselves and suppress those weaker in the name of capitalism- which is really not for progress but for profit. There should not be a class system how it is, in a country such as ours. Secondly, Only can someone who walks in someone else’s shoes really make the call to say things about their situation. Please acknowlege that having a ‘job’ does not mean having a well paid job which you can rely on and you can actually live off.. to then be able to say ‘it’s on me’ and allow movement into a different class category. Struggling between jobs, insecure and overworked provides no outlet... factor in that those who speak poor English are more likely to have very good social or family networks then someone who doesn’t. Long term unemployment has a lot of research and I’m pretty sure it is not backing up that it is ‘on you

Job keeper is people who are still working, that’s why they get more. Jobseeker people who have found themselves recently unemployed are lucky that they are now getting double. What I’d like to know is why are we paying people who have have been on benefits long term double the amount to be at home and do nothing? How has their budget been affected by the pandemic? Why do they need more money? They are staying home like always.....

I think newstart was too low but now its too higher. They shouldnt be raking in more than people who are actually working.

The JobKeeper payment is higher, then you minus the tax. They'll end up with a similar payment to JobSeeker.

Because one is doing work and the other isn't. You cant pay people the same to do a 40 hour week as you pay others not to or you will have a riot on your hands. That's not that I don't have deep sympathy for anyone who doesn't have a job.
