It refers to people becoming more aware of broader issues and not blindly following what the media presents. For example, some youngsters are beginning to understand the down side of capitalism. They would say they are woke.

If you're woke, you feel enlightened by the underbelly of reality, and consider people who aren't woke, as sheeple.
