Do you experience hallucinations in the dark?!

Answered 5 years ago

I’m curious,
I’ve always assumed this is normal until I realised a lot of people only see darkness when they closed their eyes is this true??
When I’m in my room at night before bed I see very vivid moving geometrical shapes morphing and moving interwoven in different colours within each other. They are also very complex and colourful and resemble electricity.
I see this when I close my eyes but then also when I open them in a dark room.
I’m sure there must be others with similar experiences?
I don’t drink or smoke and have never taken hallucinogenic drugs,
I heard people who take drugs have this experience but I’ve never taken drugs so I don’t understand what’s causing this. Sometimes it’s so vivid it’s scary especially when my eyes are open.
Thinking of seeing a neurologist because it’s a little hard getting to sleep some nights

Yeah mine are a part of my life now. They can scare the crap out of me but at least I know they're not real

Mmmm I kinda see weird things between sleep/wake, or wake/sleep. Scary things usually but I think there's a scientific name for it so I'm not phased atm

They're probably hypnagogic or hypnapompic hallucinations 😊

YES YES YES. I have been dealing with this since I was 14. At 30 I was told they are hypnagogic hallucinations. They can be hell scary at times but unfortunately there's not a whole lot you can do really. Please google it (hypnapompic hallucinations are similar but occur on waking)
It really is very fascinating and while I am not telling you they shouldn't scare you, a bit of understanding may put you a little more at ease.

Hallucinations can be an a sign of early onset parkinson's disease. A current affair did a recent story about it.

Actually Ive done some research and if you see them with your eyes open (depending on what it is you see) they are indeed hallucinations,
I’ve found out mine are called ‘peduncular hallucinations’ it’s exactly what I experience plus more.
