Sugar water for babies

My 6-month-old is quite constipated since starting solids. I give him some pear, mango, etc... to help, but it's not helping enough. Back when he was a couple of months old, he was really constipated, in which his doctor suggested brown sugar water. I can't remember the sugar to water ratio or how often to dose him.

Has anyone used sugar water to treat constipation and if so, what ratio and how often did you give doses to your baby?

I was told to give my 8 month old pear juice. Its meant be better than prune juice. I had tried everything, even over the counter medicine and nothing helped. I ended up seeing a chiropractor and my baby was pooping within a week

OP Thank you :) I'll give pear juice a go, too. I was using Coloxyl, but it wasn't working for him (back when he was 5-6 weeks old).

Worst case go to the pharmacy and see if any enema type laxatives can be given. When my son was just under a year they recommended them and worked in 10mins

*not sure if that's the right word but the ones you squeeze up their bum lol

OP Oh, ok. excellent! I hadn't thought of those. Thank you :)

They are more for emergency use though, like if Bub doesn’t go for 5 days etc.. pharmacist will advise you if they are what you should be using I personally would leave them as a last resort and try juices (prune and pear in that order) and just be careful not to use suppositories after 12-18m... personal exp with my child doctors said don’t do it after this age when kids can remember..

^this was me. Yep last resort but if it gets to it it's there. Make sure to get pharmacist advice first

Prune juice

OP How much and how often? Will it need diluting? It's ok to give to a 6-month-old?

 But no I wouldn’t dilute

I did one teaspoon in a cup of warm water and I did it I think about every two hours.

OP Excellent! Thank you kindly :)

It’s something I would check with the phone maternal child health service (available in vic not sure about other states equivalent) or if you can speak to your maternal child health nurse.. I’m pretty sure it’s ok to give to a 6 month old but I’m not qualified to give you the advice I’m purely basing it on the fact that it’s a natural product and I’m sure it’s been recommended to me for under 1 year old constipation. I’d give it once a day only in a bottle or cup maybe 100mls.. but pls get advice on it 😬

Oops this was supposed to be in response to my initial prune juice post and you asking how much etc.
also I was going to say pure pear juice is supposed to be good also..

OP Thanks :) I'll give Midwife-On-Call a buzz. I figured it's fine since his doctor recommended it at 2 months (maybe a touch younger - Maybe a month and a half).

Hope you got a bit of advice? Did they recommend anything else? I’d go with another poster and give the chiropractor a go.. if you’re willing to give it a try.. I think they recommended for me to be careful with that baby cereal (brains mush can’t even think of the name of it!) as it can make baby more bound up.. but hope you got some useful info too..
