I think the best thing people can do is to just calm down and remember our ancestors. Betty from 1892 wasn't feeding her 13 kids muesli bars or coq au vain every night. She was feeding them humble meals like stew and soup and meat and whatever veg they could get (assuming she lived in a place where meat was easy to come by). Instead of just using up all your pantry staples immediately, why not try and extend them farther with fresh shit. Go scavenging. Did you know, grape vine leaves are edible under most circumstances. So are dandelions. So are nettles.
Lets take some flour, some grape leaves, some dandelions,, potatoes, and some spam. If you have eggs thats a bonus too. Mix flour and egg with a little water to form a dough. Roll dough into balls (if you don't have egg, form the dough into thinnish planks and bake into matzah). Boil the balls in either water or your stock of choice until dumplings are made. Wash and dice up your grape leaves and dandelions. Peal and cube potatoes, and prepare a mash with them. Chuck in your greens to the mash. Fry up some spam and serve it all together for an honest, frugal feed. I would advise to serve fruit after or ensure your fibre needs are being met. Starchy foods will back you up (although that may save you $ on toilet paper 🤔).
How much did that meal cost you? Fuck all. Made with fresh shit available in most of the world, and some shelf stable food found in most supermarkets.
If grape leaves and dandelions aren't available, Google what IS native and edible in your area.
We have the entire world knowledge at our fingertips and people are forgetting how to survive on foraging. It drives me mad.
And maybe approach your neighbours about bartering. We traded some of our fish for some fresh fruit last year. The neighbours had an excess of fruit, and my freezer was fit to burst with snapper. In the end we gave them around 2kgs of snapper, and they regularly give us their extra fruit (they grow a lot of their own).
