Do you think with all the publicity about email scams that people can still say 'I didn't know?

Answered 4 years ago

Please don't crucify me. I'm not saying anyone deserves it. I just don't understand how people fall for these things with so many reports about it

Some people are still very vulnerable (example, the elderly) to these kinds of scams which is why they are still around.

Enough info about scams

Yeah unless you just stand how technology works, which many elderly do not then it doesn’t matter how much info there is about them.

There isn’t enough info about scams. If there was info with tips saying look at the address, or look at spelling or look out for for “free prizes” or don’t reply to emails saying “click on this link” then maybe people would be more aware. Some people don’t know how to spot one.

Some of them look so real. And some people aren’t very smart. For example my mum. She’s 72 and always thinks she’s won an iPhone or a stack of money. I’ve taught her to always let me know first before she clicks on any of these. Then I point out the little things that show it’s a scam so she knows what to look for but she never learns.

My MIL is a little older than your mum and this is her too. The scammers are getting more clever. They are pretending to be Nigerian princes anymore.

I have friends in their 40s who do the “share this post and get $100 of free KFC” things. It’s a scam to get your ‘likes’ then change the page to some random company so they can get free advertising.

I worry that my elderly parents would get scammed but they've assured me they know what they're doing

I'm sure your parents know what they're doing, but my grandmother says she knows what she's doing but clicks on popups that say a threat has been found and disables her antivirus and somehow manages to get viruses everytime! Arghhh. But she wont be told

Sometimes i don't read news or watch news and avoid talking to people for months so i don't know about something. For example, somehow i was so unaware when WA stopped using lightweight plastic bags that it literally came as a complete surprise to me and the checkout chick said they'd literally been talking about this for two years.... I had NO idea
