Financial advice

Answered 5 years ago

Where is a good place to get unbiased financial advice - not a bank or broker that gets paid to get you on side!
Someone impartial; that will look at all aspects of your finances and then give advice?

This will differ around the country, so you need to let us know where you are for people to be able to help.
You could ask friends, people at work.
Any financial adviser, you can ask them if they have links to any financial institutions, and there is a list on the internet that lists all the financial advisers and which financial institutions they are linked to, so if they fib you can double check.
I would suggest you get The Barefoot Invest or book by Scott Pape,
it really does have very good guidance on financial management, and I think one of the editions has a set of questions that you should ask any financial adviser to see if they are suitable for you.
Big W has the book for about $20. Best money you will ever spend.
There is a version specifically for families, focussed on giving your children financial smarts for life, but you need to get the one for adults first.

Op; hey! Thanks for the advice. I didn’t think of getting that book but it could be well worth a read since we have a lot going on and I also like the idea of giving financial smarts to the kids.
I’m residing in Melbourne so I guess I need to google something around Melbourne.
I don’t know if I mentioned: but I’m not looking for financial advice to dig me out of a hole, just we have some investments and I don’t know how best to manage them and go forward other than what we are doing. So it’s more just unbiased advice as opposed to financial planning if we were in the shit? If that makes sense :)

Barefoot would be appropriate for you then. He has closed his Blueprint (web site), with its share investor guidance, to new members, and is starting a Financial Counselling Service, as he is so concerned about the number of people in real strife. (Legally he cant do both).
Hopefully he will still be publishing the financial advisory information and books, as advice on what to avoid (rip-offs) is just so valuable.
He has a list of the current best places to invest money outside super, for adults, and for children. Not sure if those are listed in the new version of the book or if it is website member specific.
But the book is great guidance.
