Old Tax

Answered 4 years ago

I just logged into My Gov and saw that I had not logged tax in 2001. I would have been in senior year / year 12 so it's possibly something I'd forgotten about. I was working part time as a 17 year old. What happens if you have forgotten? I'm concerned I am in for a big fine eeeeek

Didn’t we not have to lodge one then if we earned under a certain threshold?

Check with your Accountant, but with the time lapse & you being a student, I think all will be fine

I have the same and I have no frigging idea what I was doing way back then! I won't have any hope in hell of getting documents, and would hope that they would have records of tax I was paying.

I don't think so. I would just ignore it cause they would've been under the impression that you were not working. Let sleeping dogs lay...

Don't do that. You can get penalties for not lodging past tax returns.

They only look back 5 years. Anything older than that isn't assessable.

I just googled it. It says ATO can only assess back two-four years. You're in the clear.
