Baby Girl With Two Heads Born in Indonesia

A two-headed baby girl was born last Monday, August 8, to a mother from Gresik, Indonesia.

The newborn was delivered at Ibn Sina General Hospital, weighing 4.2 kilos and reports say that the baby has suffered respiratory failure.

The baby girl is diagnosed with Dicephalic Parapagus which is a rare form of partial twinning where there are two heads and two necks side by side on one torso.

Due to the respiratory failure, she was placed in an incubator and is currently being cared for by the hospital nurses. A heart and respiratory monitor was attached to the infant to monitor her heart rate and breathing patterns.

Studies say that such conditions result from a genetic mutation which occurs in the early months of the pregnancy. Unlike conjoined twins, infants born with Dicephalic Parapagus have only one set of organs, making it rather impossible to separate them.

Most babies with Dicephalic Parapagus and respiratory failure die shortly after birth or are born stillborn. That said, this baby’s will to live is strong.

Back in 2006, a two-headed baby was also born at Pelni Petamburan Hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Nuyati, a 30-year-old mother gave birth to Syafitri who had one heart, one set of lungs, a pair of legs and two spinal cords.
