Eight-Year-Old Boy Needed Surgery To Save His Eyesight After Magpie Attack

An eight-year-old boy was rushed to hospital to save his eyesight following a horrifying magpie attack while on his way to school.

Cameron Nielsen from Gladstone, Queensland has had to undergo surgery to save his eyesight after he was viciously attacked by a magpie in what wildlife experts have called one of the worst magpie attacks they’ve ever seen.

Cameron’s mother, Skye Nielsen, told Daily Mail Australia that the magpie managed to pierce through her son’s eyelid and scratch his eyeball. “It’s went through his eyelid and scratched his eyeball across his pupil and onto the white area – it’s not deep, but long,” she said.

Ms Nielsen said she picked Cameron up from his school after they called her and told her he had been attacked. A few hours later, she said that Cameron was complaining that he couldn’t see properly and was ‘sitting in his bed with a pillow over his face.’

The boy was immediately taken to Brisbane’s Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital where he underwent urgent surgery. Ms Nielsen said she’s thankful that Cameron can now see properly. “He’s fine and back to his normal self but we have to give him eye-drops constantly,” she said.

Ms Nielsen said she was shocked that a magpie had done this to her son and said she had never before heard of such a violent attack.

Magpies, particularly the males, are known to swoop at people to protect their nests and offspring during Spring, usually from July to November.
