Mum Charged After Son Almost Dies Eating “Ice”

A mum has been charged after her baby boy allegedly ate her stash of meth.

The 21-month-old boy suffered serious seizures and was immediately taken to Wollongong Hospital, where he tested positive to having consumed methylamphetamine or ‘ice’ on January 25.

It is alleged that the boy’s 27-year-old mother, from Koonawarra, south of Wollongong in NSW’s Illawarra region, put her son down to sleep in her bedroom the night before, while she stayed in the lounge room. It is believed that sometime during the night or morning, the boy discovered the drug in his mother’s bedroom and ate it.

Medical staff said that the boy had ingested a substantial amount of the drug that was likely to cause “serious injury or death”.

The State Crime Command’s Child Abuse Squad later searched the boy’s home, where they seized methylamphetamine, cannabis, cathinone, buprenorphine and drug paraphernalia.

The mother has been charged with abandoning a child under seven and exposing them to harm, causing danger of death and six counts of possessing a prohibited drug and is set to appear in Port Kembla Local Court today.

The toddler miraculously survived and is now being cared for by the NSW Department of Family and Community Services.
