Mum Charged for Leaving Kids in Car While She Went Shopping

A mother has been charged for leaving her two young children in the car while she went shopping.

The 42-year-old mother, from North Rocks, has been charged after leaving her two sons — a five-year-old and a five-month-old — in the car while she went shopping at the North Rocks Shopping Centre on Thursday afternoon.

A concerned witness alerted security at the shopping centre in North Rocks Rd when they heard a child crying at 4.30pm.

Hills Police were told that the older boy was trying to comfort the baby. They arrived at the same time the mother returned to her car.

However, the mother told police both boys had been asleep when she parked at the shopping centre at 4pm so she left them sleeping and went to buy groceries.

Police are warning adults not to leave children unattended in vehicles. Fines of up to $22,000 can be imposed under the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act.

The mother will face Parramatta Court on August 31.
