Mum Drops Son Into Neighbour’s Arms After Being Trapped in House Fire

A mother was forced to drop her four-year-old son into the arms of a neighbour after being trapped in a house fire in Ashfield, Sydney.

Shanti, along with her husband, Tej Thapa and their son, Shirish were trapped when the Ashfield home went up in flames about 2am on Wednesday.

Mr Thapa had leapt out of the window of the burning unit, fracturing his leg. He was expecting his family to follow but when Shanti saw her husband’s right leg shattered, she decided to just toss her son out the window five-metres into the arms of a neighbour, Yam Dhital. “I came here and they throw the baby from there and I grabbed him immediately. He wasn’t crying at all, he was very sweet, really really brave about it. I’m not a hero but I saved his life,” Yam Dhital told 7 News.

Another neighbour Dipesh Lama, who witnessed the inferno said that the mother wasn’t able to make the jump and eventually fire and rescue officers came up and helped her.

Ashfield LAC Inspector Andrew Graham said that the unit’s bedroom had the most damage. “There’s significant damage to the bedroom where it appears the fire has commenced and obviously smoke damage throughout the entire premises,” he said.

The family’s roommate Nir Garbuha managed to flee via the main stairs and he and the Thapa family were all treated for minor smoke inhalation at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Mr Thapa underwent surgery on his broken leg and will need a few more days to recover.

An investigation is ongoing.
