Michelle Wilkins, 27, from Boulder in Colorado in the US, was eight months pregnant with her first child when she was lured to the home of Dynel Catrece Lane, 36, in March last year, who advertised a baby cot for sale online.

Ms Lane, 36, had faked her own pregnancy and deceived her husband David Ridley, who she reportedly told would be the baby’s father.

The court heard that when Ms Wilkins went into the basement to look at the crib, Ms Lane allegedly hit her, tried to choke and smother her before cutting the baby from her womb. Ms Lane then left Ms Wilkins on the floor unconscious, while she allegedly took the baby to a hospital with her husband, claiming she had suffered a miscarriage.

“When I came round, my whole abdomen was searing with pain,” Ms Wilkins told The Mirror.

“I looked down and saw the cut across my stomach, I felt my intestines fall out of my body as I tried to get up.”

When she regained consciousness, Ms Wilkins called police, despite losing 50 per cent of blood. She was reportedly barely alive when she arrived at the hospital, but she miraculously survived after an operation.

In her first interview since the attack, Ms Wilkins said that she already had a nursery set up, all except for a crib, so she looked for one online and saw Ms Lane’s advert then immediately arranged a meet up at Ms Lane’s house.

She said they chatted in the living room for about an hour before Ms Lane offered to show her some baby clothes in the basement. That was when Ms Lane attacked her from behind, grabbing her by the sweater. “She pushed me into one of the nearby bedrooms. She wrestled me on to the bed, got on top of me and tried to start smothering me with a pillow,” Ms Wilkins said, adding that Ms Lane allegedly smashed a lava lamp over her head, before stabbing it into her neck and tried to choke her.

“I remember thinking ‘I have to survive for Aurora’,” she told the Mirror.

“But then everything went black and the next I knew, I woke up on the floor.

“I tried to stand but I couldn’t feel my legs, so I fell forwards. Then I became aware I could feel my insides through my pants, I could feel the blood seeping out.

“When I felt my intestines through my stomach, I hoped that was Aurora, that it wasn’t my gut,” she said.

She said she recalled holding her daughter’s tiny dead body in hospital, as she dressed her and sang to her.

“It shouldn’t be anyone’s first moments with their daughter, holding, dressing and singing to a cold body,” she said.

A Colorado jury in February found Ms Lane guilty on all six counts related to the case, including attempted first-degree murder, assault and unlawful termination of a pregnancy. She was sentenced to 100 years in jail.
