Is this a very low wage?

Answered 2 years ago

I work in Melbourne part time, my job description would be reception/ office admin/ payroll related. I have a lot of responsibilty and also have access to the business bank accounts. I am over 30, and have been with this company 10+ years. My hourly rate is $21.69. Is this low?? I feel it is but curious to see what others think as i am thinking about moving on. It doesn’t seem worth the stress i am under. Thanks

Wouldn't get out of bed for that. Before managing a pub I earned more than that working behind the bar.

To be honest I wouldn’t get out of bed for that. Both myself and my partner are in the mining industry and we work almost 90 hour weeks and have a week off. We work exactly half the year and earn good money.

that's minimum wage. I wouldn't work for that. 10+ years ago I was on salary which worked out to 27 per hour with all the benefits. Fuck that.

It’s low but admin is paid poorly.

I think so but don't work in admin. It depends on skill and accountability (like payroll being done correctly). I've seen basic admin jobs for similar amounts but without so much responsibility. No way I'd work for so little $ so don't really look at the criteria. I'm guessing you accept the wage so they aren't motivated to increase it.

Look on job websites & websites that tell you what roles should be earning so you know what others are earning locally. Then ask for more or start applying.

I think it's low, for your responsibilities. I would suggested going onto the Fair Work & search the Clerks Award. That rate sounds like Level 1. I think with Payroll & banking duties, you should at least be a Level 3 $24.39. You should be able to search level of required experience/duties. Once you've done some home work, approach your employer for a pay rise, around $25-30/hr. Use your home work & your current role & experience to validate/support the pay rise.

Sounds low to me. If you've been there for so long, it's probably worth asking for a pay rise before moving on. At worst they'll say no and you get a new job anyway.

Yeah, that to me, is low for the role.
