6 Types of Antenatal Classes for Expecting Mums

Hooray! Bub is on the way and you’re adding a beautiful bundle of joy to your home. But what do you do, now?

Sure, there are thousands of books to tell you what size and fruit your growing baby is and you probably have a checklist of all the things you will need to buy before baby arrives. But some of the best lessons, advice and support you will gain is from attending one of the many Antenatal classes available to expecting mums Australia-wide.

Here are six classes that vary in cost, methods and environments, but all are sure to not only answer some of the questions you may have but also to introduce you to new friends that you may very well have after your babies have entered the world providing a whole other level of support and understanding.

1. Basic/Hospital Antenatal Classes

Most hospitals offer expecting mums the basic (and most commonly visited) antenatal classes. Whether you go through the public or private system, your hospital will be able to provide you with all of the details you need to sign up and start classes. The process of labour, pain-relief options, possible medical interventions and basic caring for your baby information is all covered and partners are usually welcome. The group activities encourage interaction with the other expecting parent(s) and are a wonderful way to meet new mums-to-be whilst having a laugh and learning.

2. Calmbirth

These classes are becoming very popular with expecting mums learning skills to encourage a calm and confident birthing process. The classes also encourage mums to accept the process of labour and birth, allowing it to unfold however nature sees fit.

Relaxation and breathing techniques are key elements to Calmbirth classes along with the art of visualisation. Again, partners are usually encouraged to join the mum-to-be at the class which makes for a wonderful bonding experience.

3. Active Birth

For mums who would like a natural birth, Active Birth classes are designed to teach mums how to manage labour and the birthing process using their own resources. Methods covered include breathing techniques, music and the use of equipment such as fit balls and stress balls.
