Taking Public Transportation with Kids

Taking Public Transportation with Kids

For many parents the thought of taking public transportation with kids is like running their knuckles down a cheese grater.  But for a lot of parents that don’t have a vehicle or choose to take public transportation rather than using their own vehicle to run errands, it is a necessity. If you live in a large city then it can be often quicker to jump on a train rather than try to battle through commuter’s traffic. If you live rurally, taking the bus into town may provide a welcoming change of pace for the kids. So whether you have lost your license, lost access to your car for the time being or have simply lost patience with the traffic, here are some tips to taking public transport with your kids in tow.

Make it a Game

If your children are used to taking the car, then riding the bus can be an exciting adventure. Explain to them about the rules about taking a bus or train, such as staying in your own seat. Give them plenty of notice that you will be riding the bus or train so that they have a chance to get excited about it and prepare for the journey.

Bring Quiet Activities

The kids won’t have the radio to keep them entertained (or to drown out their screams) when taking public transportation. What this means is that you need to rely on other things to entertain them. They may be happy to just watch the traffic pass by or they may get bored of that within minutes. With the constant stops and starts, it might take you longer to get to your destination. Bring a couple of quiet activities, such as books, puzzles or electronics for the kids to play that will not disturb the other passengers. Loud musical toys are best left at home. Furthermore, if your children get motion sick, then some toys may worsen this such as books.

Pack Lightly

There is nothing worse than getting onto a crowded bus, except perhaps getting onto a crowded bus with more stuff than you can carry. Consider investing in a light weight stroller for bus rides and for running errands which will be easier to lift on and off the train or bus than a bulky stroller. If you have a baby carrier, this can also make things easier as you can carry your bubby and still have your hands free. Unpack the baby bag so that you only bring what you need and lessen the load for the trip.Taking Public Transportation with Kids | Stay at Home Mum

Plan Your Route

Taking public transportation one way most likely means you are going to have to take it back home. While the ride there may be fun and exciting, the ride back may be a little less so, especially if you are dealing with children that are getting hungry or tired. To make it a little easier, know what time and when you want to take the bus. You may wish to stop and give them lunch or a snack while waiting for the bus. Getting to the stop and finding out that you have missed the bus by a few minutes can leave you feeling even more drained after a long day out. It takes all of two minutes to check the schedule online before you go and can save your sanity later on.

Give Your Children Tasks

Let them help you with the various tasks involved in taking public transportation, such as giving the bus driver the money, purchasing the train ticket and choosing a seat. Letting them help out with all of these activities will give them a sense of purpose and pride and hopefully give you a few moments of peace!
