UPDATE: Mother of Murdered Baby Girl To Face Court

UPDATE: A young mother charged with the murder of her six-week-old baby girl is due before court today.

The 26-year-old woman was arrested outside her Newcastle home on Friday morning after the infant was found inside with her throat slit.

It is understood the woman’s mental health will form a central part of the investigation and she is expected to undergo a psychiatric assessment.

A neighbour said she heard a child’s screams from the home of the family, who she has described as “very normal and just happy”.

The mother of a six-week-old baby girl stabbed to death in her family home is expected to be charged with her murder today.

The Daily Telegraph has reported that the 26-year-old was escorted “screaming and in handcuffs” from a Newcastle home after her six-week-old daughter was allegedly found dead with her throat slit.

It is believed the child’s aunt phoned emergency services after finding the baby deceased in the woman’s home early this morning.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports emergency services were called to Curry Street home about 9am.

Newcastle LAC Superintendent John Gralton said the child’s mother had been arrested and was currently being interviewed by detectives at Waratah Police Station.

Supt Gralton said he could not comment on the child’s injuries or if any weapon was involved.

“The death is being treated as suspicious,” he said.

It is alledged that the child’s father was home at the time of the attack.

The mother has been taken in for questioning at the Waratah Police Station, and it is believed she is to undergo a psychiatric assessment.

Wallsend is a working class suburb west of Newcastle.
