Boy Burned By Exploding Toy

An eight year old boys father rushes to the backyard after hearing the terrible screams of his son.

Khalid Awad’s son Omar was playing in the backyard of his Sydney home around 10pm, with an ethanol fuelled remote controlled car before it exploded. The toy unexpectedly caught fire and overwhelmed the boy in flames, Omar suffered horrific burns to his chest and arms.

“I found my wife and a couple of visitors just screaming, and I ran to the backyard and found fire on my son’s body,” Mr Awad told 9News.

Upon running into his backyard, Khalid saw his son on fire and in an attempt to put out the fire he began rolling Omar on the ground extinguishing the flames.

Omar was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, with serious burns to his chest, stomach, arms and hands.

Having undergone several operations, including skin grafts to treat the burns, Omar is in recovery.

“He was talking to me. He was saying, ‘sorry Dad, sorry’,” Mr Awad said of his son’s injuries.

“I said to him, ‘you’re not sorry, I am the one who should be sorry, I should be with you all the time'”.
