When it comes to chocolate, there’s nothing that goes better in our eyes than orange, particularly in these Fudgy Chocolate Orange Brownies. They are super soft, fudgy and delicious, with a stunning citrus tang. Make sure you get fresh, colourful oranges for your zest, to give it a real punch.

Method

  1. Grease and line a 22-23cm square baking pan with baking paper and preheat your oven to 180 degrees.

  2. In a bowl, sift the plain flour, cocoa powder and salt. Set aside.

  3. Using a saucepan on a low heat, melt together the butter and the dark chocolate until combined. Remove from the heat and cool to a lukewarm temperature.

  4. Once this chocolate mixture is somewhat cooled, add in the eggs, vanilla and brown sugar. Stir well until sugars have dissolved.

  5. To this mixture, fold in the dry ingredients. Then fold through the orange zest and ensure it is well distributed.

  6. Pour this into your prepared baking pan and bake for about 30 minutes until the surface of the brownies in the middle of the pan looks dry and firm. You can test with a toothpick, but due to the fudgy nature of the brownies it will only tell you if the centre is still liquid. Do not over-bake, or you'll get dry brownies.

  7. Cool in the pan, then cut into squares prior to serving.
