Mum Faced With Agonising Decision As Scans Show Her Unborn Baby’s Organs Growing Outside The Body

A mother was faced with an agonising decision after a pregnancy scan revealed that her unborn daughter’s organs were growing outside her body.

Kristella Marios, from country Victoria, was on cloud nine as she goes for her 12-week pregnancy scan to see how her baby was progressing, but the feeling was short-lived after the devastating news she got after the scan.

Rather than seeing a healthy, growing baby on the monitor, doctors were alerted to something worrying. They ran further tests and after a week, they told Ms Marios and her partner, William, that their daughter had gastroschisis, a condition where the organs grow outside the body. “It’s a birth defect which means her intestines and bowel are growing outside of her body through a hole in her stomach,” Ms Marios told Daily Mail.

The couple were extremely saddened by the news. They said that they had not experienced any medical issues like this with their kids before. They have an eight-year-old son, and William has two kids with a previous partner.

Soon after, they were confronted with an excruciating decision.

“The doctors asked if I wanted to have an abortion.

“It’s one of the hardest questions you are asked, but I never had a feeling I wanted to do that,” Ms Marios said.

So, Ms Marios said they decided to continue with the pregnancy, and they were told that their daughter will have to be operated on as soon as she’s born, to put her organs back into her body.

Ms Marios is now currently 30 weeks pregnant. She will have a caesarean section in six weeks so her daughter can have the life-saving surgery. She said that it has been a difficult pregnancy, both emotionally and financially, that sometimes made her overthink things. “Every day you worry that more organs might be coming out of her belly, because as she grows it can get worse. But she’s also not as big as she should be because of it. She’s only about 800 grams at the moment but she should be 1.5 kilos. She’s not getting the nutrition normal babies do, and that’s stressful,” she said.

A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help the family financially because after their daughter is born, she will have to be in hospital for at least four weeks and potentially have more surgeries.

Despite all the hardships, Ms Marios said she is determined to get her little ‘miracle baby’ home.
