Stay at Home Mum reviews the Emma Comfort Mattress

When it comes to mattresses, there are sooooooo many options out there. But if you’re looking for a memory foam mattress that’s perfect for soft and medium-hard sleepers, the Emma Original Mattress is a great choice. This mattress is made of high-quality memory foam that’s both soft and supportive. It’s also buoyant, which means it won’t sink down too much when you’re lying on it.

Emma recently sent Stay at Home Mum one of their Award Winning Emma Comfort Mattresses for us to try for ourselves.

The Emma Comford Mattress Was Replacing Our Crime Scene Mattress

My son has chronic blood noses and his old mattress really did look like a crime scene (blood doesn’t come out of mattresses!) – so he was due a newbie (note to self: always buy a mattress protector for the kids). He’s 14 years old and six foot four – so a big lug. He is very active and needs a good firm mattress for support.

But as you know, mattresses are expensive so I have been putting off getting him a new one because of the expense.

I will admit that although I’ve seen Emma Mattresses advertised anywhere, I didn’t know a whole lot about them. And when I lay on one for the first time – it wasn’t what I expected – because I’ve only ever had spring mattresses. And the Emma Comfort Mattress is memory foam.

The only memory foam mattress I’ve ever sat on is those schmancy Templar mattresses that are about a billion dollars.

Is the Emma Comfort Mattress Comfortable?

It is… but if you have never laid on a memory foam mattress, – it is certainly different! Unexpected.

The memory foam is very firm, but you still ‘sink into it’ a little. It is supportive and keeps you in one position. I think it would be awesome for tossers and turners as it does make it harder to do so. It’s like a gentle cuddle.

What Does The Emma Comfort Mattress Look Like?

Hmmm like a mattress. Hey, you cover it with sheets anyway so does it matter? I think the features of the mattress of much more important.

The Features of the Emma Comfort Mattress

It Has a Machine Washable Cover

Okay, let’s look at the features. For starters, the mattress has a removable, machine-washable cover. Great for sweaty teenagers and just to keep the mattress nice and free. Fantastic for asthmatics too.

It’s Deep Baby, Deep

The mattress is also 25cm-deep, which makes it perfect for people who want a little extra support while they sleep.

It’s Eco-Friendly

The outer-layer of the Emma Comfort Mattress is made from eco-friendly foam. It complies with the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 – Class 1 (Certificate Number: 16.0.93305) which certifies that the mattress is free of harmful materials, and is safe for babies and toddlers.

Cool Foam Layer on Top

Traditional memory foam mattresses are notorious for being hot. But to combat that, this Emma mattress has a 3cm breathable Airgocell foam layer that helps to keep the mattress cool and comfortable.

I Need Support!

Lastly, the mattress has a 2cm of visco-elastic memory foam that contours to your body and provides support where you need it most.

It has a 10 Year Warranty

I love this, because my previous $2k spring mattress is all lumpy after just five years. And that isn’t cool. I’m shocked a mattress can offer such a huge warranty period. Impressive.

How Firm is the Emma Comfort Mattress?

The Emma Comfort mattress is a medium-firm mattress that sinks. For some people, this can be a little too soft. But for others, it’s perfect. Depends on what you like.

We’ll start by looking at the pressure relief provided by the mattress at both the shoulders and hips. This is an important consideration for side sleepers, as it can often be difficult to find a mattress that provides adequate support.

The Emma Comfort mattress does a great job in this regard, thanks to its contouring design. Next, we’ll move on to back sleepers. The Emma Comfort mattress is also a great choice for them, as it offers nice contouring and support for the spine and shoulders.

However, it should be noted that the mattress may not be suitable for stomach sleepers. This is due to the fact that it doesn’t provide enough sinkage for the stomach area, which can be problematic for heavier people.

Verdict: Soft to Medium firm!

Was the Emma Comfort Mattress Comfortable?

It was – it did just take a bit to get used to the memory foam because I’m used to a spring mattress. And I think anyone who is used to a spring mattress may lie on the Emma and go… ‘Ohhhh’. It’s different. I liken the Emma Mattress to sinking in shallow quick-sand – nice comfy quicksand. Comfy supportive quicksand.

What about Motion Transfer with a Partner?

We all know how important a good night’s sleep is. But sometimes, no matter how exhausted we are, we just can’t seem to drift off into dreamland. One of the most common culprits of sleepless nights is a restless partner.

Thankfully, there are now mattresses like the Emma Comfort that can help reduce motion transfer and allow you to get the uninterrupted sleep you need. The Emma Comfort mattress is designed with a special type of foam that reduces motion transfer.

This means that if your partner tosses and turns in the middle of the night, you’re less likely to be disturbed. And we all know how important a good night’s sleep is for our overall health and well-being.

Verdict: Great for light sleepers!

Is The Emma Comfort Mattress Hot to Sleep On?

The Emma Comfort Mattress aims to reverse the stereotype that memory foam mattresses tend to overheat. This mattress outperforms the all-foam bed competitors in terms of cooling performance. Its polyfoam and permeable cover help you maintain a comfortable body temperature.

Even overheated sleepers will likely find the Emma to be a cool solution, in my opinion.

Nonetheless, the mattress can trap heat, and some may feel hot. But, that’s not much of a bother. If you’re on the heavier side, it might though!

Verdict: It can be, if you’re heavier.

It Comes in a Box in the Mail

I love that Emma comes in the mail – to your door – in a box. I thought ‘How the hell are they going to fit a Queen Size Mattress into a box?? ‘, but they compress it with a special vacuuming process and once the mattress it unwrapped, it expands into it’s full glory!

Emma does recommend allowing the mattress to decompress for up to 24 hours after unwrapping before sleeping on it.

How Much Does the Emma Comfort Mattress Cost?

Here is the sizes available, and the current pricing at the time of writing:

  • Single (188cm x 92cm x 25cm) − $549
  • Long single (203cm x 92cm x 25cm) − $599

Is it Worth Buying an Emma Mattress?

Absolutely! The Emma Comfort Mattress is affordable, comfortable, and convenient. It offers much better value for money than traditional spring mattresses (which in the past I’ve paid over $2k for!).

My Honest Thoughts on the Emma Comfort Mattress

I’m a terrible sleeper. I toss and turn so badly that my husband sleeps in the spare room (and has done for the last 15 years). I actually think with an Emma Mattress he could come back and sleep in the same bed with me.

My son who was the lucky duck that got the Emma Mattress in our house loves it. He describes it as ‘Both soft and firm’ – which although contradictory – I think the exact same thing.

Would I buy an Emma Comfort Mattress with my own money? Yes, I would. I think it is an excellent value-for-money mattress.
