On the 3rd of December 2009, Keli Lane has her first court date for Tegan’s murder, and the trial is set to begin in August of 2010. During this time, the dark secrets that Lane spent much of her adult life hiding come to light. The public sees her as a woman who can’t seem to manage contraception, yet has no love or care for the children that result from her own actions. Against all the odds, it is decided that Keli Lane will be charged with the murder of her daughter, although police still haven’t found Tegan’s body.

By December of 2010, the jury were ready to deliver their verdict. They had two very important things to consider in this regard. If they believed it was reasonably possible that Tegan was alive, and that Lane had given the baby to her father or some other unknown entity, they should find her innocent of the murder.

However, if they were satisfied beyond doubt that Lane caused the death of Tegan by a deliberate act, done intending to kill her, she must be found guilty.

And she was.

Keli Lane was found guilty of lying under oath and murdering her daughter Tegan Lane. She was sentenced to 18 years in jail with a non-parole period of 13 years and five months. She will be eligible for parole on the 12th of May 2023, and despite appeals she remains in jail.

Sadly, there is still no sign of little Tegan Lane, and at this rate is seems we may never know what became of her.

How could a mother do this to her own child?
